Do you ever stop to think about how you’re spending your time in your business each day? It’s important to spend your time wisely in order to see real growth and results. You should strive to make sure that you’re the owner and not an employee of your company. An owner is going to work on the business and not just in it.
A good way to ensure that you think like a leader is to look at every area of your business – operations, finances, marketing/sales, and customer service. Make bullet points of everything that needs to take place in each of these areas and highlight those that tend not to get enough attention. Devise a plan to increase the time and attention that gets spent on these areas.
Don’t forget to spend your time on strategic thinking; this is huge and definitely deserves your focus and time. Think of ways that you can improve your business. Having the ability to think strategically about your business usually requires getting away or carving out space so that you don’t have any distractions. Set aside some time on a quarterly basis to review all facets of your company.
It can be hard to break old habits and make new ones. If, after self-examination, you realize that you’ve been acting as an employee and not the owner and would like to change this, make a concentrated effort to ask yourself on a daily basis – am I acting like the owner or an employee?
